Journalit runs an MCP server, so an AI app such as Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code or Codex can work with your journal directly. Ask it which setups lost money last month, have it tag a week of trades, or get it to draft your weekly review from the trades you actually took. The AI app reads and changes your real vault through Journalit, with the same rules the plugin applies when you do it by hand.

Quick path

Turn on MCP access in Journalit's settings, add https://api.journalit.co/mcp to your AI app, then sign in to Journalit and approve. See Set up in Journalit and Connect an AI app.

What an AI app can do

Read your journal

Query trades, open a single trade, read reviews, and calculate analytics such as win rate, expectancy and P&L by setup or ticker.

Make changes

Create and edit trades, reviews, accounts, setups, tags, custom fields and other configuration. Every change is previewed before it is committed.

Run syncs

Start Trade Sync and other connected integrations, and check their status.

Open views

Open a trade, review or Journalit view in Obsidian so you can see what the agent is talking about.

The AI app only gets the permissions you approve when you connect it. See The consent screen for what each permission group covers.

How it works

The AI app connects to Journalit

You add Journalit's MCP server URL to the AI app. When it connects, it opens journalit.co, where you sign in, review the permissions and choose a vault.

Journalit runs the request in Obsidian

Obsidian must be open with Journalit running and Enable MCP access turned on for that vault. If Obsidian is closed, the AI app is told the agent runtime is offline and can't read or change anything.

Changes land in your vault

Changes are written to the notes in your vault, exactly as if you had made them in Journalit. Deletions, merges and large changes wait for your approval unless you give agents full access. See Approvals and undo.

Set up in Journalit

AI access is switched on per vault, from Journalit's settings in Obsidian. Once it is on, the same settings screen gives you the MCP server URL, the approval controls and a running count of your monthly AI tool calls.

Turn on MCP access

Open the AI apps settings

In Obsidian, open Settings → Journalit → AI apps (MCP).

AI apps (MCP) settings in Journalit with Enable MCP access unchecked and Status showing Off, explaining that no AI app can use this vault until it is turned on

Turn on Enable MCP access

Tick Enable MCP access. This makes the vault available to AI apps you approve on journalit.co with your Journalit account.

Check the status

Status changes to Connected once Journalit is ready to take requests. Keep Obsidian open with Journalit running while you use your AI app.

Copy the MCP server URL

The Connect an AI app block shows the MCP server URL with a Copy button, plus short steps for Claude, ChatGPT and Claude Code. The URL is the same for every AI app:

https://api.journalit.co/mcp
AI apps (MCP) settings with Enable MCP access ticked, Status showing Connected, and the Connect an AI app block showing the MCP server URL https://api.journalit.co/mcp with a Copy button and the Claude tab's three connection steps

Connect your AI app

Follow the steps for your app in Connect an AI app below.

Full access, usage and activity

Below the connect block, three rows control what agents may do and show what they have done.

Lower part of the AI apps (MCP) settings: the Full access toggle turned off with a warning about what agents can change without approval, Monthly usage showing 71 of 1,000 AI tool calls used this month with the reset date and a note that inspection, previews, navigation and docs lookups do not count, and the AI agent activity row with an Open button

Full access

Off by default. When off, deletions, merges and large changes wait for your approval. When on, agents make every change without asking.

Monthly usage

AI tool calls used this month, your plan's limit and the reset date. Manage apps opens the AI & Usage page on journalit.co.

AI agent activity

Approve or deny waiting requests, and review or undo recent agent changes.

Turning AI access off

Untick Enable MCP access to stop every AI app from using this vault. To remove one app's access instead, disconnect it on the AI & Usage page.

Connect an AI app

Every AI app connects to the same MCP server URL and signs in with OAuth, so you never paste a password or API key into the app. The app opens journalit.co, you sign in, check the permissions, choose a vault and approve.

https://api.journalit.co/mcp

Add Journalit to your AI app

Menus in third-party apps change often. If a step below doesn't match your screen, the app's own help page linked in each tab has the current wording.

Works in Claude on the web and in the Claude desktop app.

  1. Open Customize → Connectors. In some versions this is Settings → Connectors.
  2. Select + Add, then Add custom connector.
  3. Enter a name such as Journalit and paste the MCP server URL.
  4. Continue, then sign in to Journalit and approve access.
  5. In a chat, select + → Connectors and make sure Journalit is turned on for that conversation.

On Team and Enterprise plans, an organisation owner adds the connector under Organization settings → Connectors, and members then select Connect on it. Plan limits for custom connectors change over time, so check Claude's custom connector guide.

Approve on journalit.co

Whichever app you use, the sign-in ends on Journalit's consent screen. Check that the app name matches the one you just added, choose the vault, and select Approve. See The consent screen for what each permission means.

Try it

Ask your AI app something like "Using Journalit, how did my trades do last week?" A good first answer confirms the connection, the vault and your allowance are all working.

If the app can't reach Journalit, see Troubleshooting.

Approvals and undo

An AI agent can change your journal, so Journalit keeps the risky changes in your hands. Routine edits go straight through, while deletions, merges, failing a prop challenge and large rewrites wait until you approve them. Most agent changes can also be undone afterwards.

Approvals

Every change starts as a preview. The agent sees what would happen and can show you before it commits. Previews never need approval and never change your vault.

When the agent commits, Journalit applies the change straight away unless it is one of these:

Deletions

Deleting journal items, configuration or list entries, and removing entries or images from a review. The full list is below.

Merges

Merging one tag, mistake or event into another.

Failing a prop challenge

Marking a prop challenge as failed.

Large changes

Any change that touches more than 25 notes, such as renaming a tag used across many trades.

The deletions that wait cover trades and accounts; setups, custom fields, session workflows, review templates, and dashboard and home layouts; tags, mistakes, events, account types and session log tags; a single account transaction or prop challenge cost; and session log entries or images removed from a review.

Without full access, these wait for you. Journalit shows a notice in Obsidian, and the request appears under Waiting for you in AI agent activity. Select Approve to let the agent finish, or Deny to refuse it. After you approve, the agent commits again and the change is applied. If the agent has stopped waiting, ask it to try the change again. If a request doesn't show up, see An approval request never appeared.

AI agent activity

Open it from Settings → Journalit → AI apps (MCP) → AI agent activity → Open, or run Open AI agent activity from the command palette.

AI agent activity window with a Delete tag request under Waiting for you, which would delete partials from 5 notes, with Deny and Approve buttons, and Recent agent changes listing an Update trade change with an Undo button and a Create mistakes change

Waiting for you

Requests that need your approval, with what they change and how many notes they touch.

Recent agent changes

What agents changed, with the time and an Undo button where the change can be reversed.

Full access

Full access in Settings → Journalit → AI apps (MCP) lets agents make every change without asking, including deletions, merges, failing a prop challenge and large rewrites.

  • Turning it on doesn't approve anything already waiting. Those requests stay in AI agent activity until you approve or deny them.
  • It is a setting of this vault, so it covers every AI app connected to it.

Only for agents you trust

With full access, an agent can delete and change trades, accounts, reviews and settings, and rewrite many notes, without your approval. Keep it off unless you trust the agent and the instructions you give it.

Undo an agent change

In AI agent activity, select Undo next to a recent change, then confirm.

Undo the agent's change confirmation dialog explaining that Journalit reverses the change and leaves anything edited since as it is, with Cancel and Undo buttons

Undo covers items the agent created, and its edits to trades, accounts, setups, custom fields, reviews, session log entries and session log tags. It reverses only what the agent changed, not the whole note. If you have edited the note since, Journalit doesn't undo that change and leaves your edit in place.

Changes that can't be undone

Renames, merges, deletions and changes that rewrite many notes can't be undone from AI agent activity. Deletions, merges and large rewrites wait for your approval unless you give agents full access, so check them before you approve.

Consent and connections

You decide what each AI app can do before it touches your journal. The consent screen on journalit.co sets that up when you connect, and the AI & Usage page lets you review and remove connections afterwards.

The consent screen

When an AI app connects, it opens journalit.co. After you sign in, you see the app's name, the domain it identifies itself with, and what it is asking for.

Journalit consent screen asking to allow Visual Studio Code, client domain vscode.dev, to access Journalit, listing four permission groups with their access levels, a stay connected notice, the monthly AI tool call allowance (100 on Free, more on Pro), the vault to connect, a collapsed Connection details section, and Cancel and Approve buttons

Permissions

Permissions are grouped by what they let the app do. Expand a group to see the individual permissions inside it.

Vault access

The vault this connection can use. Each connection works with one vault.

Connection details

The client name and public client ID, for checking exactly which app is asking.

Only approve what you started

Approve only if you started this connection yourself, from an AI app you recognise. If you didn't, select Cancel.

Choosing a vault

The list shows the vaults where you have turned on MCP access. Pick the vault you want the AI app to work in. To move an app to a different vault later, disconnect it and connect it again, choosing the other vault.

The AI & Usage page

Open AI & Usage from the journalit.co dashboard sidebar, or select Manage apps in Journalit's AI apps settings.

AI and usage page on journalit.co showing Pro AI tool usage of 71 of 1,000 completed this month with Pending 0, Limit 1,000 and a reset date of 1 November 2026, and a connected Visual Studio Code client for the vault named vault with its granted permissions, connected and last used dates, and a Disconnect button

Usage this month

AI tool calls completed this month against your plan's limit, calls still pending, and when usage resets.

Connected AI clients

Each app with its domain, vault, the permissions you granted, when it connected and when it was last used.

Disconnect

Removes the app's access to that vault straight away. You can connect it again later with a new approval.

Stopping every app at once

To stop all AI apps from using a vault, untick Enable MCP access in that vault. See Turn on Enable MCP access.

Plans and allowance

AI access is available on every plan. Each month includes an allowance of AI tool calls:

PlanAI tool calls per month
Free100
Pro1,000

What counts

Other tool calls, such as reading trades, reviews and analytics, and committing changes.

What doesn't count

Inspection, previews, navigation and docs lookups. Committing the same change again isn't charged twice.

When it resets

Usage resets at the start of the 1st of each month (UTC).

When you reach the limit

Reading and committing stop until the reset. Inspection, previews and navigation keep working.

Track usage in Journalit's settings under Monthly usage, or on the AI & Usage page on journalit.co.

Your data and privacy

It's your data

Your journal stays in your vault. The AI app works through Journalit rather than reading your files directly.

You choose the vault

Each connection is tied to the one vault you pick on the consent screen.

Disconnect at any time

Remove an AI app from the AI & Usage page on journalit.co, or turn off MCP access in Journalit to stop every AI app using that vault.

What the AI app sees

Anything the AI app reads, such as trade details or review text, is sent to that AI provider as part of your conversation. Their privacy terms apply to it.

Troubleshooting

Most AI app problems come down to three things: Obsidian isn't running, the connection points at the wrong vault, or the month's allowance has run out. Start with the message your AI app reports.

Common problems

Still stuck?

Ask on Discord or email contact@journalit.co with the AI app you use and the exact message it shows.

Agent tools

AI apps see these tools. You don't call them yourself, but the names help when you read an agent's activity or ask it what it did.

ToolWhat it does
inspect_journalChecks the connection, vault, accounts and integrations available to the agent.
inspect_configurationReads setups, templates, layouts, workflows, custom fields and other configuration.
query_tradesLists and filters trades.
get_tradeReads one trade in detail.
