Move your Excel trading journal
into Journalit

If you currently journal your trades in Excel, Journalit gives you a cleaner long-term workflow without forcing you to re-enter history by hand. The same import flow used for CSV imports can handle spreadsheet-style journals, including direct P&L sheets, messy headers, and mapped metadata.

Free includes journalling, analytics, dashboards, review templates, and unlimited trades.
Excel and spreadsheet migration uses the Pro import workflow, which you can test with the 14-day trial.

Excel and CSV column mapping inside Journalit

How Excel migration works

The goal is to keep you from rebuilding your journal manually. Clean spreadsheets migrate quickly. Messier files still need review, but the workflow is designed for that reality.

  1. 1

Bring in the spreadsheet or export it for import

Start from the Excel journal you already use. Journalit's import workflow is the same path used for CSV imports, so you do not need a separate migration system just because the source began in Excel.
  2. 2

Map the columns and choose the real header row

If your sheet has extra metadata rows, non-standard headers, or mixed formatting, choose the correct header row and map the fields before importing the full history.
  3. 3

Review the result before trusting it

Validate a sample first, especially if your spreadsheet uses direct P&L instead of entry and exit prices, mixed notes columns, or inconsistent formatting across months.

What this handles better than a normal spreadsheet import

Real Excel journals are rarely clean exports. They usually have manual notes, direct P&L columns, custom tags, screenshots, or rows that should not be imported at all.

Direct P&L sheets

If your journal tracks wins and losses directly instead of entry and exit prices, the import flow can still map that style correctly.

Mapped metadata

Tags, setups, mistakes, thesis notes, and custom fields can be carried over instead of being dropped during import.

Spreadsheet images

If the workbook contains embedded images, you can review and decide what gets imported instead of losing that context blindly.

Messy files are normal

Extra title rows, blank separators, commentary rows, and inconsistent headers are common in long-running Excel journals. The workflow is designed to help you select the real header row and skip noisy rows.

Do a sample first

If your spreadsheet evolved over time, import a representative sample first before bringing in years of history at once.

Why traders eventually outgrow Excel journalling

Excel is flexible, but it usually becomes harder to maintain once the journal needs clean reviews, repeatable tagging, and a workflow that survives beyond one spreadsheet.

  1. 1

    Spreadsheets drift over time

Columns change, formulas get copied badly, tabs multiply, and eventually the journal becomes harder to trust than the trades themselves.
  2. 2

Journalling gets reduced to data entry

Most spreadsheet journals are good at storage, but weak at structured reflection, reviews, and keeping process notes beside the trades.
  3. 3

Journalit gives you a real review workflow after import

Once the history is imported, you get dashboards, Trade Log analysis, and built-in review templates without losing ownership of the journal itself.
